Tremella fuciformis (Snow Fungus)
The fruit body is a white, translucent, gelatinous convoluted mass. There are lobes or folds orientated in a variety of directions. It may grow to over 10 centimetres in diameter and several centimetres in height, but often is smaller. On drying it shrinks dramatically.
The fruit bodies are found on dead wood in a variety of habitats, especially wetter forests.
Look-alikes
The striking white colour and the pronounced lobes should make this an unmistakeable species. There are some creamy Tremella species, a bit more cushion-like so the overall appearance is more brain-like. Some species of Exidia are also creamy and with a somewhat brain-like appearance.
