Thanks Aussie gall - agree with your guesses about what may be happening - It is also possible that chicks from the same nest can be days apart in their fledging so there mau be a chick in a hollow nearby - say within 100m

Thanks, Aussiegall! I was excited when I saw the pair through a window. I've seen other birds sunbathe, but until now, no koels. The male quickly spotted me through the window and moved into a nearby tree, but she remained on the ground. At times she had her mouth open, 'panting'.
