Thanks. This is a very interesting observation. Are they still visiting? The young are from last breeding season and probably fledged last January. Gangs-gangs typically have two young chciks and of around 75 nests we have observed young at, it has always been from 1-3 young. So I think the young are probably from a number of families. This year we have observed parents returning with young to check out the hollows they used last season (not sure where they go outside the breeding season). Young do then seem to form up into "teenage" gangs and may take several years before they bond into pairs. At this time of year adults are nesting. Egg incubation takes 4 weeks and chick development 7-8 weeks. For the first 6 weeks or so an adult is always in or at the hollow. So perhaps all birds are young and one male has a more developed crest, or a pair has tried and failed to breed, or only the male is a breeding adult (it is hard to tell female young from adults on appearance). So there may be a nest nearby to look out for. We don't know much about Gang-gang movement, but a male who is distinctive because he has lost his crest (Baldy) has been observed foraging 4km from a nest where he was feeding two young, so nearby can be a little stretchy.
