we Have decided to Let them eat the plant,? Papilio aegeus, the orchard swallowtail butterfly or large citrus butterfly is a species of butterfly from the family Papilionidae, that is found in eastern Australia and Papua New Guinea.

The larvae of this species are sometimes considered a pest, due to their feeding on citrus leaves in suburban gardens.[1]

Thanks very much for your advice and info! I'm happy to leave it where it is. Maybe I'll be lucky enough to see the pupa.

Spot on again Curiosity. Just leave it where it is. This is a final instar (mature) caterpillar which may have just moved on from the food plant to pupate.
