Thanks, Roger. I appreciate your suggestion. I've looked at the contributions on CNM and didn't see a good match with the yellow velvet pattern on the one I reported. Giving special attention to images of male velvet ants, I thought the closest one was in Mutillidae (family), sighting 4371255 by 'trevorpreston'. Maybe I'll be lucky and see this wasp again, from a different angle.

Correct. There a quite a few species illustrated on CNM (other wasps) but nothing quite like yours but worth a look.
