User's notes

Incredibly beautiful moth, found at the base of Eucalyptus pauciflora. Images slightly blurry as it was vibrating its wings. Had a tail, like a small bird! Gently tried to coax it into my hand and it flew off.

@ibaird @donhe @SuziBond Pinara sp? Maybe a Pinara divisa or similar male? Going off Suzi's book, Moths in the ACT.

Yes, I think Pinara (genus), strongly suggests a dark male. Likely to be P. obliqua judging by photos of the male of the species on the ALA and a corresponding lack of more prominent white spots on the forewing as in P. cana and P. metaphaea. There seem to be at least three male Pinara (genus) species with strong bright orange hindwing margins: P. obliqua, P. cana and P. metaphaea. Of these the orange extent and brightness in the hindwing seems most prominent in P. obliqua.

@ibaird yes, looking at CSIRO's collection, I agree that P metaphaea seems likely. Thank you! A gorgeous moth.

See now, I've looked closer and I now think P. obliqua. is most likely. I may be wrong. Moths Online is a good palce to compare the three male Pinara species I mention.

@ibaird yes, I should have been more clear, Moths Online was indeed the CSIRO reference I was using, and it is very useful! Looking at P obliqua now and seeing that it definitely fits best.

@MatthewFrawley thank you! My old dog Bonnie was sniffing this fellow, so I suppose she should get the credit for this find! Hehe!

I did spot another today but unfortunately I startled it before I managed to get the camera focussed on it!
